What is Boneset?
Boneset is a permanent flowering herb from Eastern United States and Canada. It grows on meadows and swamp from New Scotland to Florida and continues to be west like Texas and Northern Dakota. The scientific name of the plant is eupatorium perfoiatum and acquires its common name from traditional use in medicine. It often grows near Phalaris arundinacea or Reed Canary Grass. eupatorium perfoiatum collects when during the summer months in flowering. Although dengue fever does not actually affect bones, it causes serious pain in muscles and joints. The general name eupatorium perfoiatum may also be related to its historical use in tiles. Since the leaves are tightened by ants wrapped around the stem, the belief that the use of eupatorium perfoiatum leaves in the dressings of the splint could help heal the broken bones. Because of this feature, the plant is also called Agueweed, Feverwort or Poti. In the 19th century, EUP was used in the United StatesAtorium perfoiatum as a medicine for many different diseases, including cold, flu, digestive, malaria and typhoid.
eupatorium perfoiatum is usually served as hot or cold tea. One or two teaspoons of dried herbs are immersed for 10 to 15 minutes in a cup of boiling water. The infusion is bitter and astringent and sometimes causes nausea. While chemical studies of Bones do not have the definitive disabling any therapeutic compounds, they propose the possible presence of immunostimulants. eupatorium perfoiatum does not have the history of adverse side effects beyond vomiting.
