What is Carolina Jessamine?

Carolina Jessamine is a permanent, climbing vine native in Central and North America, which grows wildly from Guatemala to the southeast US. Its Latin name is Gelsemium sempervirens and is a state flower in South Carolina. Carolina Jessamine has thin, twining, reddish stems and when climbing trees, walls or other forms of support can easily grow 10-20 feet (3-6 m). Its elongated, green, glossy leaves are 2-4 inches long (5-10 cm) and its large, bright yellow flowers are in the shape of trumpets, sometimes with orange centers. All parts of the plant, including SAP and nectar, contain toxic alkaloids that can cause skin irritation, convulsions and respiratory failure. The word Jessamine is a variation on Jasmine and many of these names are inspired by strongly fragrant flowers of the plant. Flowers appear in half of spring until mid -summer and attract butterflies and many other insects.

Carolina Jessamine is BA graceful garden plant in many American states from Florida to Virginia and west to Arkansas and Texas. It is often used to cover fences, arbor and lattice leaves.
