What is Chutney-Soca?

Strach is an Indian spice or side dish made of pickled fruit or vegetables, except when it is a musical genre. The original music genre from the Indian subcontinent underwent a radical transformation in America after the Indians emigrated to the Caribbean and South America. The result was Chvney-Soca, a crossover genre that combines two musical styles and their common tools.

Chodney music has its roots in India, where large drums called Tassas carry a line of rhythm for music. This genre was originally folk music with songs created for religious and cultural ceremonies. dholak and dhantal are Indian drums that provide other music for the melody of the song. Strach in the Caribbean and South America has accepted the accordion as part of the music repertoire. In Trinidad, Strach Music also has a sitar, a stringed instrument similar to guitar.

Soca music has its roots in the unique Caribbean Calypso genre. Soca songs often provide political, cultural or fIllosophical comment. The Soca music pace is much faster than for Calypso, with bands generating pulsating, rhythmic dance music. Musicians commonly use traditional Western musical instruments, sometimes with rhythms provided by Congo drums. Unlike Chvney, soca music often mixes electrical and acoustic tools.

Chodney-Soca got a name at the end of the 80's. It contained musical selections in Hindi and English that combined melodies, rhythms and tools from the Genres of Strach and Soca Music. Although it was not the first artistic to do the chutney-Soca, this musical genre had no formal name before the release of the now famous album Drupatee.
