What is Cyrtomium?

Cyrtomium is a genus of approximately 20 species of ferns in the Dryopteraceae family and comes from Asia. One of the most popular, Cyrtomium Falcatum , also known as Japanese Holly Fern, is a species that is widely grown as a filling for ornamental boundaries and as a domestic plant. In many parts of the world, cultivation has escaped to become naturalized. Like most ferns, it prefers to be kept moist. It is atypical in that it will tolerate a greater degree of sun than many ferns.

Japanese Holly Ferly fern grows in an upright position like a rounded hill. It can reach 2 to 3 ft (0.7 to 1 m) high and 3 ft (1 m) in width with leaves that can be more than 1.5 ft (0.5 m). These shiny, dark green leaves are carried on the stems. Each sheet is segmented by six to ten pairs of leaflets. The segments are known as Pinnae. Individual leaflets have a leather feeling, teeth, come to a sharp point and are very similar to Holly leaves.

This kind of cyrtomium keeps its leaves all year round in areas that do not receive frost. However, this casts them in a colder climate. This type of ferns is resistant to 14 ° F (-10 ° C).

In the wild, the Japanese Holly Fern grows at lower altitudes. It grows in wet areas such as slots in rocks, stream banks and coastal cliffs. Plants are found throughout North America and Europe, except their native Asia.

For cultivation, this type cyrtomium is one of the simplest types of ferns. In the United States it was a popular porch in the south since the 18th century. It tolerates strokes, dry air and low light levels as a house plant. Japanese Holly Fern prefers bright light and soil that is kept hard to damp. This ferns prefers household temperatures 50 ° to 55 ° F (10 ° to 12.8 ° C) at night and 68 ° to 72 ° F (15.6 ° to 20 ° C) during the day.

The set plants should receive fertilizer in half the strength at six months of intervals. Crowded plants should be re -affected in early spring. 1 gallon (3.8 liters) soil mixture should be added two tablespoons (about 30 grams) of bone meals.

As a garden plant, this popular type of cyrtomium is a good complement to the shady bed of fern or banquets and caladia. Japanese Holly Fern prefers acidic rich soil that drains well. It should occasionally be fertilized with standard fertilizer or fish emulsion. If the leaves become ugly, they can be limited and grow again if the crown is not damaged.
