What is echeveria?
echeveria is one of the largest plants resistant to drought in the Crassulatae family, consisting of more than 150 recognized species. These succulents can be easily identified by their rosettes of colored meat leaves. Most types of echeveria are extremely hardy and are able to tolerate hard, dry climate. There are also finer echeverias that are grown as houseplants. Almost all species come from Mexico, but echeverias are now grown by gardeners around the world.
also known as hens and chickens, echeverias have strong succulent leaves that are often covered with wax, hairs or dusty food. These leaves are usually a shade of blue-green with red or brown toes. More exotic types of echeveria have bright red or orange leaves that have deeply disheveled edges.
The most popular echeveria Gans , echeveriadomingo and echeveria spp "Cinderella." e. Elegans has a typical production of hens and chickens with tightly wrapped rosettes that quickly develop new plants as offshoots. The excellent garden succulent, e. echeveria spp "Cinderella" is a hybrid juicy with large leaves that turn yellow-green to bright red, as the plant develops.
Unlike most succulents that are grown as garden plants, they must usually be moved or re -blown after two or three years. The upper leaves of the plants should remain healthy throughout the year, but older lower leaves usually die back. This can result in an unpleasant appearance that can only be repaired by planting the whole plant.
echeverias are particularlySensitive to mealybugs when they are grown as a house plant. Mealybugs can be detected by white and black spots that are formed on the leaves of the plant. Minor contamination can be solved with soap and water. Greater infestation of Mealabug can be eradicated with commercial insecticid spray.
Like many succulents, echeverias can be spread by means of strings, offshoots, seeds or even individual leaves. These plants require a soil that has excellent drainage to prevent roots. echeverias should be planted where the direct sun and in the afternoon get a shadow in the afternoon. Most of these succulents can handle different climate. There are several species from Northern Mexico, which can survive temperatures from 20 ° Fahrenheit (-7 ° Cels).
