What is EUCOMIS?
eucomis is a genus of flowering bulbs in the Hyacint family, hyacinthhaceae. There are about 11 species, all originally from South Africa. Common names include the pineapple flower and pineapple flowers due to the shape of the plant.
The most commonly refined species is eucomis aubumnalis . There are three recognized subspecies: e. Autumnalis autumnalis , e. Autumnalis amaryllidifolia and e. The plant, which can reach a height of 2 feet (60 cm), has a cylindrical stem covered with hundreds of yellow -green flowers, overflowed with leaf tufts. It is assumed that it resembles the pineapple from which the plant takes its common name. When flowers ripen into fruit with shiny black seeds, the plant is still decorative.
e. Autumnalis is relatively easy to grow and is good for planting on garden borders, large pots or fluctuations. It can be grown from onions, seeds or cutting the sprays. Plants grown from seeds may require up to five seasonsón to start flowering after the seedlings appear.
e. Autumnalis prefers full sun and wet soil, even if it tolerates a partial shadow. It is best with a lot of well -recorded compost in spring and lots of water during the flowering season in the summer. The plant is sleeping during the winter and tolerates frost slightly.
eucomis vandermerwei is another popular decorative plant, originally from the town of Steenkapsberg in Mpumalanga in South Africa. It is one of the smallest plants in the genus and grows up to about 4 inches (10.16 cm) high. e. Vandermerwei contains summer flowering, burgundy flowers and its leaves are undulating and spotted purple. Has a similar shape to e. Autumnalis
e. Vandermerwei was first described in 1944 by South African botanist Inez Clare Verdorn. It is tolerant of low temperatures and can be promoted by seeds or cutting leaves. Unfortunately withE became an endangered species due to excessive collection.
eucomis bicolor and eucomis comosa is one of the most visually striking species. Both have yellowish green to white flowers with purple to lavender accents. e. Pallidflora , e. With the exception of e.
