What is Franklinia?
Franklinia is a type of tree or shrub. Originally it grew in the southern United States, but since then it has been grown to grow in the northeastern part of the country. Franklinia trees can be identified by their more suitcases, rounded pyramid shape, elongated leaves and 3 inch white flowers that usually bloom in summer.
Most tree types are on the Lesser Town. The tree usually grows between 15 and 20 feet tall (4.5 to 6 meters), but can also grow as a shrub. A good gardener can prune Franklinia and train it to grow like a tree. It is deciduous, which means it loses its leaves in colder months. Before the leaves fall, it turns on a live red -orange color.
While the leaves of Franklinia are large, up to 8 inches long (17 cm), produces small fruit. The tree berries usually do not have a diameter of more than 1 inch (2.5 cm). It usually takes up to a year or longer to reach full maturity, namely the bear seeds.
All trees of Franklinia that exist in modern times come from trees set by John and William Bartram in their garden in Philadelphia. Bartrars found a tree in Georgia in 1765 and named it according to the inventor of Benjamin Franklin, who was their boyfriend. William Bartram planted seeds for a tree in his garden in 1777 and in the 80s of the 20th century. Most people believe that all the trees of the wild Franklinia died out at the beginning of the 19th century. Many trees that Bartram planted in Philadelphia continues to live.
Although the tree was found in the warmer part of the United States, it is best suited in zone 5, where the average minimum temperature is -10 ° Fahrenheit (-23 ° Celsius) is each year. The tree also prefers acidic soil that drains well, which could be the reason why it did not survive in the southern United States separately is clay similar and poor discharge. People who decide to grow Franklinia in their gardens, maybe they want to place a tree on the hills to stimulate the soil to release properly.
The tree is not drought resistant and should often be connected. It produces flowers under full sun, but can tolerate a partial shadow, especially during the hot summer. While the tree does not have many pests, its roots can rot if it is not properly taken care of.
