What is Gatka?

Gatka is a form of martial arts primarily practiced by followers of Sikh's religion. It focuses on physical, mental and spiritual training. The word gatka literally translates from Pandjab's from "one whose freedom belongs to grace". It is also the name of the practical wand used in martial arts. Practice is no longer used in combat, but, like many other martial arts, it has become a form of competition.

According to Sikhism, Gatka was given by Guru nanak nine by the divine spirit in the 15th century. This divine martial arts were taught by the Sikh Warriors army, and even a gurus of a religion trained in Gatka, believes in the ideal of a warrior. The art was handed over by generations until the 18th century, when Shaster Vidiya began to train the ritual version of the British Indian Army. Later, the merger of British and Indian cultures caused the implementation of European rules for fencing into Gatka. This resulted in the format of two basic forms of art, ritual or races and sport, or khel .

There are three basic principles of gatky. It is easy learning, diversity of weapons and the ability to fight more opponents. The primary teaching of martial arts is the movement of the whole body in the alignment as one complete weapon and reaction without hesitation. All methods of attacks and defense are determined by the current position of the leg, hands and weapons. Rasmi Gatka is usually done in time with a triangular drum cycle to help coordinate movement and support focus.

The use of weapons that include both right and left hand is preferred. It is assumed that this practice stimulates the body to cooperate and show no weak points. The Masters of Art is often double -sided, which means they can use their right and left hands with the same skill. Gatka is a train in groups and usually in a religious atmosphere. Institutes that teach exclusively Gatka and sometimes Pehlwani, Indian Wrestling style are commonplace in India.

Gatka SupportIts a wide range of weapons, including swords called tulwars , bamboo rods called lathi and whips, chains and throwing weapons called chakram . Given that in practice, movement patterns, weapons and individual style play the role, many people who have completed the same training have developed personalized combat styles. The sword and shield and lathi are the two most common weapons choice. In the battle, Gatka Warriors were known for their unique combat capabilities and great courage.
