What is Hedysarum?
Hedysarum is a genus of plants that is part of the Fabaceae family. It consists of about 100 types of annual and permanent herbs that come from North America, Europe, Asia and North Africa. Most species have thick clusters of flowers that are stacked vertically on the branches. Like other members of the Fabaceae family, Rod Hedysarum absorbs compounds produced by microorganisms in the root system to grow. This genus of plants is usually found on open plains or pastures.
The name of the genus is derived from the Greek word Hedusaron used by Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher, to describe the plant in the Fabaceae family a thousand years ago. The Hedysarum genus was appointed by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. Most plants in this family are commonly called sweetvitch. For example, Hedysarum Boreale is called Boreal Sweetvitch or Northern Sweetvitch, and Hedysarum alpinum is called alpine sweet.
This genus is called this genus cultivated all over the world. h. boreale is found afterthe whole Canada and the western half of the United States. h. Coronarium fills the North African country in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia and in Spain is also growing. h. Gmelinii is distributed throughout North Asia, from Siberia to northern China.
h. Boreale usually grows to a height of 12 to 36 inches (30-90 cm) and has more marked stems. The leaves are green and are usually stacked individually at different heights on the stem. The leaves can be composed of a single leaflet or divided into two leaflets.
depending on the species are flowers red, pink or purple and bloom from April to August. Flowers on h. Boreale are usually symmetrical pea flowers, but in some varieties five petals are connected to the base and arranged as a cup. Flowers generally attract butterflies.
It is recommended to grow boreal sweets in dry, sandy or rocky soil that has mildlyalkaline pH. Its natural habitats are dry, rocky slopes and roads. This species also requires a lot of direct sunlight and an average amount of water.
plants in this family are quite interesting. Most plants use Taproot, which consists of a centralized main root that extends vertically down. Peripheral roots project laterally from the main root. It has a sweet taste and is commonly referred to as liquorice. It is the main diet of brown bears and several European species are grown for cattle feed.
