What is iochroma?
iochroma is a genus of plants that is part of the Solanaceae family. It contains about 24 species of flowering shrubs and small trees that come from South America. Most of them are evergreen plants that have trumpeter -shaped flowers that bloom in clusters. These tropical plants are usually grown in greenhouses or containers. Some pests are attracted by plants in the iochrome family, including the red spider mite and a whitefish. Many species are known by other names. For example, iochroma Australis is commonly known as Trumpet Blue Angel and iochroma fuchsioides is known as Red iochroma.
Almost all plants in this family are located in the tropical areas of South America. i. Lehmannii is grown in Ecuador and i. i. Fuchsioides is found in Colombia. Depending on the species, the flower is purple, blue, red, yellow or white. Flowers grow about 2 inches (5 cm) to length and hang upside down frombranch. Most of them are sweet smelling and usually attract hummingbirds. The ground under the shrub is often covered with hundreds of bright colored fallen flowers.
Usually the shrub can grow up to 13 feet (4 m) in height and spread to a similar width. i. Cyaneum contains glossy green leaves that are gray at the bottom. This species is evergreen, which means that the leaves remain on the bushes all year round.
