What is Jideigeki?

Jideigeki is a genre in Japanese theater art. The term literally means a "period piece", with most of the dramas of Jideigeki taking place in the period of EDO Japanese history, which took place from the beginning of 16. This genre in theater art is quite popular in both Japan and outside, while viewers enjoy pieces of Jideigeki for the taste of the old Japan they offer. These pieces usually have a number of characters, including stereotypical villains, traders, government officials, entertainers and craftsmen, and the accuracy of Jideigeki performance can vary very much. In some cases, the settings and characters are carefully accurate, while in chambarr or "sword fighters" subgroup of the Jidaigeki genre can play quickly and relaxed with the history of entertainment. Actors usually use old -fashioned dialects or accents to emphasize the feeling of being in the past, and these performances are often heavy on clichés, with very stylized POstava, which can be particularly known to Japanese viewers. It is common for the hero to have a catchphrase that is repeated at different points of the performance, and the hero is eventually victorious.

Some remarkable examples of this genre include movies wounds and Rashoman , but Jideigeki shows can also be seen on TV, on stage and sometimes in video games, allowing viewers to take over a more interactive role. Some animated functions are also clearly derived from Jideigeki genre with scenes and characters to evoke the essence of old Japan.

Like western people enjoy watching period pieces set in Western culture to gain a feeling of live history, the Japanese enjoy the performance of Jideigeki for their taste of the past. Some actors in the genre become quite well known for their performances. For the inhabitants of the West, such performances are culturally interesting, ACKOIf many may miss fine and gentle references to Japanese culture in Jidaigeki performance. They can still enjoy sweeping views, characters and scenes of these performances, even if they lack details.
