What is pilosocereus?

Pilosocereus is a genus of column cacti from arid areas of Mexico, West India and South America. They can be grown by gardeners outside in an arid landscape or in the interior if they live in a cold climate. Some types of pilosocereus , such as pilosocereus fulvilanatus , are endangered by extinction in the wild.

Rod pilosocereus includes about 50 different types of cacti. All pilosocereus cacti are in the shape of a column, which means that they grow into a tall, upright shape of a cylinder resembling a column. These plants often produce funnel -shaped flowers that open at night and remain in flowering for less than 24 hours. The flowers are generally large, produce a strong aroma and can come in different colors of blue, yellow and white.

The native range pilosocereus is wide. They come from Mexico, Western India and South America, especially in Brazil. Yet these plants were cultivated elsewhere,Especially in dry areas of the United States.

In order to survive these plants, it must be kept in a warm and arid environment. They can only be grown outside if in a desert environment where frost rarely occurs. pilosocereus cacti must be protected from the smallest frosts. Some gardeners recommend that if frost is expected, the peaks of the cactus stems can be placed on the tops of the stems in the hope that the most beautiful part of the plant can be protected to the top of the cactus stems. They can also be grown in pots, which are either maintained in the interior throughout the year or left outside during the summer. It should be noted that if they grow in pots, these plants may not reach full height.

Because pilosocereus cacti are desert plants, they do not need a lot of water and overloading can actually cause harm. The area most pilosocereuS comes from the experience of drought from November to May and wet season from May to October. Some gardeners suggest that because of this trend, these plants should be imitated regularly at the end of spring and early autumn and irrigation should be much smaller for the rest of the year.

There are some types of pilosocereus that are endangered. One example is pilosocereus fulvilanatus , which is originally from arid areas of Eastern Brazil. The native environment of this cactus was largely destroyed by the cultivation of agricultural land and also by converting soil for coal production. The only pilosocereus fulvilanatus still survives in a wilderness that lives in rocky areas unsuitable for use of humans. Although this plant is rare, this plant is often grown in kindergartens, botanical gardens and private gardeners.
