What is Rose Campion?

lychnis coronaria , commonly known as Dusty Miller or Rose Campion, is a flowering plant belonging to the family caryophylllaceae or carnation. Rose Campion, originally from parts of Europe and Africa, is now used as an ornamental plant in gardens around the world. It often grows to about 2 to 3 feet (61 to 91.4 centimeters) and adds a bright color to the landscape. Although its origin can be traced to parts of North Africa, southern Europe and the Middle East, this plant has naturalized in North America. The beauty of this plant has been recognized for centuries and has been grown as an ornamental plant since the 13th century.

Rose Campion is a two -year plant, which means it is a short -term perennial. Leaves, stems and roots are formed during the first year. After a period of dormancy in colder months it begins to bloom in second year and maybe even the third year. By the end of the third year, if some flowers have remained in the seed, new seedlings begin to appear and maybe bloom.

sheets are coldThey are in contradictory pairs along the stem. Because they are covered with soft, fine hairs, Rose Campion leaves have a silvery gray look on them. They are in the shape of an oval and their size may vary from 2 to 6 inches (5.1 to 10.2 centimeters).

Rose Campion flowers can move in color. The flowers are largely bright pink or dark red, but some may be white. These 1 -inch flowers (2.5 into a centimeter) usually begin to bloom during the spring and summer of the second year of growth. Each flower has about five petals in the shape of a heart.

Although it will grow well in a partial shadow, Rose Campion prefers placing in a full sun where it is successful. This plant is popular among many gardeners, Nikolinly because of striking flowers, but because of the ability to grow in poor dry soil.
