What is SXE?

SXE is an abbreviation of the "direct edge", a term used to describe the youth movement that avoids the use of drugs, alcohol and other substances considered by members of the movement as “poisons”. This movement arose among the followers of hardcore punk music at the age of 80, especially in response to hedonism associated with punk music in this period. Although many direct Edgers are followers of punk and metal, it is not necessary to be a punk fan to follow the SXE principles. This includes drugs and alcohol, while some people also avoid tobacco and caffeine. Some are vegan and believe that animal products damage the body and spirit, and others also avoid occasional sexuality. Different people have different interpretations of what it means to be SXE, and many communities exist for equal Edgers who want a network with people who have similar interests.

Members of the movement are also known to point out that it is one of the few youth movement that makes drug abstinence, occasional sexuality and other potentially harmful behavior not only socially acceptable, but sometimes socially desired.

The origin of the abbreviation "SXE" for a straight edge seems to be in nightclubs and other places to mark minors with X so that they are not served alcohol.
