What is the tundra wolf?

The term "tundra wolf" can refer to three different subspecies of the kind of gray wolf known as Canis lupus . Tundra wolves are generally larger than other gray wolves and have stronger tires that protect them from the Arctic air. In North America, Alaskan Tundra Wolf and Mackenzie Tundra Wolf are inhabited by Alaska and Canada. The third subspecies are located mainly in northern Europe and parts of Asia.

Alaskan tundra wolves, or Canis lupus tundrurum , live in tundra areas near the coast of North Alaska and were classified in 1912 as a subspecies by a zoologist named Gerrit Smith Miller. Adults grow to 50 to 64 inches (127 to 162 cm) long. The female usually weighs between £ 80 to £ 120 (36 to 54 kg), while men weigh £ 85 to £ 176 (£ 38 to 80 kg).

Mackenzie Tundra Wolf has been classified to subspecies Canis lupus occidentalis since 1992. Zoologist Rudolph Anderson originally classified him as Canis lupus Mackenzii in 1943.They are located on the northwest territories of Canada near the Great Bear Lake and to the north coast. The colors of the coat for this subspecies are usually white, black or gray, although they can also be a mixture of one of these shades. In full cultivation, it measures between 60 and 65 inches (152 to 165 cm).

Robert Kerr classified European Tundra Wolf as a subspecies Canis lupus albus in 1792. The extent for this subspecies ranges from the Kamchatka Peninsula to the north coast of Western Russia and Finland. Their coats are usually a mixture of reddish -brown, black, gray and silver shades. Adults reach an average length of 84 inches (213 cm) and weigh £ 100 to £ 125 (45 to 57 kg).

Tundra wolves are skilled thp hunters in packages are able to catch great prey. Alaskan tundra wolves prefer to feed deer, while Mackenzie Tundra Wolves eats mainly Caribou. European tundra wolves eat a number of large mammals, including BIzon, elk, musk and wapiti. Tundra Wolves will also be prey on smaller mammals, such as rodents, hunting alone or when larger prey is not available.
