What is Tradescantia?
Tradescantia is a genus of about 70 species of flowering permanent plants, commonly called Spiderworts. Other common names of Tradescantia include cradle-lies, flowering inch plant, oyster plant and lily spider. They come from parts of northern, central and South America, from southern Canada to northern Argentina. The plant is called by two English scientists, father and son from the 17th century named John TradeScant.
Tradescantia usually have a bright blue, three-ooulated flowers with six yellow anthers, although some species have white, pink or purple flowers. In many species, flowers open in the morning and close in the afternoon. The plant is sometimes considered to be weeds, although it is also cultivated as a garden plant and a plant plant. It is popular as a border plant in gardens.
