The story Tristan and Isolde is framed by prelude and Liebestod (the theme of love and death). The event begins on Tristan's ship when it brings Isolde from Ireland to Cornwall to marry his uncle, King Mark. Tristan enters and Isolde takes the Cup from Brangäne and hand over it to Tristan. After drinking, she also did, she did not know that Brangäne had replaced the love potion. The famous "Tristan Chord" can be heard as a couple of hugs, Brangäne looks in despair and the King of Mark's approach can be heard.

Act II takes place at the castle of King Mark when King Mark and his courtiers go for hunting. Brangäne vaRaje Isolde of Melota, a duplicate "friend" of Tristan, who is trying to attract the couple. Lovers meet as Brangäne watches.
