What is zoysiagrass?
Zoysiagrass is the warm season grass originally from China, Japan and parts of Southeast Asia. It was named after Austrian botanist Charles von Zois. Because the original import to the United States came from Manila in the Philippines, he is also known as Manila Grass. Zoysiagrass is popular as a ground cover in the southern half of the United States, from coast to coast.
In Europe and the United States, three types of Zoysiagrass are used. Manila Grass is scientifically known as Zoysia Matrella . zoysia japonica is coarser, but more tolerant species that come from China and was first introduced to the United States in 1895. Sometimes it is called the Korean lawn or Japanese lawn. Zoysia Tenuifolia , the most beautiful but least cold resistant zoysiagrasses. It was introduced to the United States from Mascarene Islands and sometimes called Mascarene Grass or Korean Velvet Grass.
Zoysiagrass is very resistant to drought, resistant to salt, resistant to wearWeed resistant and pests resistant. Can be grown in different soils. However, Zoysiagrasses do not tolerate poorly drained soils because they are designed to save moisture.
In the warm climate, Zoysiagrasses grow well in the shade. Zoysiagrass can be grown from seed, spligs or sod depending on the species. It is slowly growing and therefore does not contain well if it is damaged.
Zoysiagrasses are commonly used for lawns, golf courses and baseball fields. They hold adequately under traffic, but are not recommended for very high traffic, such as certain areas of football fields and football fields. It is because of their slow growth rate.
Zoysiagrass should be planted at the end of spring or early summer. The limiting bed must be well crushed, firm and smooth. Be careful that the semenoposel is without weeds and pay special attention to the weed control of severalweeks after planting. Nitrogen fertilization or similar fertilizers is also general.
If zoysiagrass is planted from fans, the soil must be kept moist while the plant becomes introduced. It may be useful to place a bright plastic cover over the growing grass. This method not only helps to maintain moisture, but also maintains the temperature reasonably high.
Although zoysiagrass is drought resistant, it may require some watering during very dry periods such as dry winters. Fungicides may be required to prevent brownpath, rust and leafy diseases. Insecticides should only be used if there is a problem with pests.
