How can I test the transistor?

You can test the transistor on functionality by performing several simple procedures using digital more meters. Most more digital meters are equipped with a diode test function that can be used to test the transistor. If the transistor is already connected to the circuit board, it will have to be removed from the board before testing. The electronic transistor can be used in the circuit as an amplifier or as a switch. Regardless of its application, the procedure used to test the transistor is the same, because all transistors basically act as two parallel diodes that share a common element.

You will need to identify the type of transistor you are testing before starting the actual test procedure. Transistors that are known as positive negative positive (PNP) have two input terminals and one output terminal. The transistor, which is a negative positive negative (NPN), will have one input terminal and two output terminals. Both types of transistors have total terminals,which are known as the basic terminal, collector terminal and emitter terminal.

The type of transistor together with the location and identity of its terminals is usually marked on the outer cover of the transistor. If the type of transistor is not marked on the packaging, you can perform a simple test with more meters to do this. Determine the orientation of the three transistor terminals and attach a positive line of multiple meters to the basic transistor terminal. Next, connect the negative guidance of the meter to the collector or the transistor emitter terminal. If more meters display read above zero, then the transistor is the type of NPN.

As soon as you determine the type of transistor and the orientation of its terminals, you are ready to start a real test procedure. If you want to test the transistor to the functionality, to turn the dial more meters to set the diode. Next, attach the positive guidance of the meter to the basic transistor terminal. Then you should dTurn the negative guide of the meter to the collector's transistor and check the resistance. Next, touch the negative line to the emitter terminal and check the resistance. After completing this procedure, you will need to re -perform a complete test with a negative lead connected to the basic transistor terminal.

If the transistor is functional, reading the resistance from the first part of the test will be very low and the second part will be very high. If the transistor is the type of PNP, you will need to perform the first part of the test with a negative lead connected to the base terminal and the positive line will be connected during the second part. If the transistor is functional, the first reading will be high and the second will be low. Transistors generally ten want to stop working suddenly, rather than gradually. Replacing a defective transistor is usually cheaper than replacing the circuit board itself.
