Rain sensor principle

The infrared scattering rain sensor is divided into several different parts. The optical element is attached to the inside of the front windshield through a silicone pad, usually under the endoscope bracket. The transmitting tube and the receiving tube are on the PCB of the rainfall sensor, and the rainfall sensor is fixed on the optical element through a mechanical locking mechanism. Generally, the optical components, sensors, and endoscope brackets are completely enclosed by a decorative cover. No difference can be seen from the passenger compartment, and the driver will not be affected visually. It can be seen from the figure that the light guide surface of the optical element is a parabola, so if the transmitting tube and the receiving tube are placed at the focal point of the parabolic surface, the light incident on the windshield through the optical element can be considered as parallel light. The rainfall sensor is a relative measurement. When the glass surface is dry, it is considered that the light emitted by the transmitting tube is incident on the windshield in parallel and is reflected back by 100%. It is collected by the optical element and received by the receiving tube. In the case where the outer surface of the front windshield is dry, the sensor is first initialized, so that the light intensity received under a fixed emission current can be obtained. In this case, the intensity of the light is usually relatively high.

When there are raindrops on the outer surface of the windshield, the light incident on the windshield is partially scattered, and the light from the receiving tube after reflection is reduced. The greater the rainfall, the less light is reflected back. By comparing with the received light intensity when the windshield is dry, the size and number of water droplets on the windshield at this time can be obtained, and then different rain patterns can be determined, and a wiper request is sent to the body controller BCM or Independent controller controls the wiper to perform intermittent wiper, low-speed continuous wiper and high-speed continuous wiper.
