also known as "audio cassette", "compact cassette" or "tape", the cartridge is a recording format, which was most often sold at the end of the 70s until the beginning of the 90's and often presented pre -inferred music. His immediate predecessors include an 8-foot cassette or "stereo 8" and a 12-inch vinyl LP or "record". The compact disk (CD) replaced the cassette as a dominant pre -recorded music format at the age of 90, while MP3 and other types of audio ensembles took over as the most popular music formats in the new millennium. The rectangular shape is this type of tape formed by two coils magnetically coated tape in the center. It was first produced by Phillips at the age of 60 for sound record purposes and became mass produced under the name musicassette , or "M.C.", in Germany 1964. Players like Walkman®from Sony. For this reason, most of the pre -recorded music cartridges contained "notation protection" cards that protected the tape from recording and caused the rise of empty sold for commercial use.

Although the cassette was overtaken in the popularity of the CD at the end of the 90s, the cartridge remains a more durable recording format that is resistant to the same sound interference caused by the dust particles that suffer from the CD. However, the CD features exceed the properties of the tape, including the ability to play music at the beginning of the selected song without the need for fast or rewrite, higher sound quality and easy recording from one pre -recorded format to empty, referred to as "burning" of CD or "dubbing" tape.

Pre -recorded music cartridges can still be found for some music dealers, especially in bargain containers. They are often sold for drastically discounted prices.
