What is a paper battery?
According to an article published by the Hamilton Institute, there are more than 15 billion batteries around the world. Approximately 89 percent are estimated to be common home batteries or alkaline variety. This represents various environmental problems. Battery acid is highly toxic, heavy metals can penetrate the water supply and, if burned, components cause air pollution.
The invention of a paper battery was considered an effective “green” or environmental technology. The battery, which is made of up to 90 percent of cellulose, is not stronger than a conventional sheet of printer paper, about 0.25 mm (0.00098 inches) thick. Due to its composition, the paper battery is completely non -toxic and fully biodegradable.
created in 2007 by a group of students on the Renssel Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, the paper battery is the result of paper filled with nanotubes that allow paper to perform electricity. The carbon -tannotube is a small cylinder -shaped wire made of carbon,Naturally occurring substances that are the basis of most of life on the planet. The introduction of carbon nanotubes into a paper battery gives it a unique feature. Unlike most batteries used, the paper battery can be twisted, crumpled, formed or twisted into different shapes and not lost any integrity. Nanotrubic flexibility allows these actions to occur and the battery will be equally efficient, no matter what form it is twisted.
The paper is also filled with electrolytes in the form of liquid salt that supports the conductive properties of the battery. Due to their highly conductive state, paper batteries can function as a normal lithium-ion battery and a superpacitor. This means that the battery can store and regulate a higher amount of electricity.
No wires creation of the battery is connected to the procedure. For this reason, the battery has a functional temperature range -100 to 300 degrees Fahrenheita (-73 to 149 degrees Celsius). The wide temperature range represents a number of options for use, including high heat and frost environment, in which normal batteries could be subject to breaking, rupture or cracking. Due to the unique battery design, the medical community has battery eyes for use in pacemakers.
Paper battery is made as completely integrated devices, unlike most alkaline batteries that contain several components. Nanotubes are built into paper after creation and electrolytes are soaked in cellulose. This means that all components are connected to each other at the molecular level, giving paper batteries another level of durability.
