What is IR LED light?

Infrared light emitting diode (IR LED) is a device that creates light with wavelength just a little longer than the human eye sees. These devices emit light in a nearby infrared range, which means that they produce a light that is closer to a visible light spectrum than microwaves that are the next longest wavelength. IR LED light works similar to LED light that produces visible light, although it often has different performance requirements. These devices are commonly used in electronic and safety systems.

IR LED light consists of two parts of semiconductor material, positively charged sections and negatively charged parts. When the LED light is turned off, the area between the two sections becomes a neutral depletion zone that does not allow the current to switch from one side to the other. With the addition of electric charge, electrons on the negative side are able to jump to the positive side, which is a process that allows Vyolitons to release a certain amount of energy and EMites the photon. The distance that the electrons jumps dictates the wavelength of the photon they release. In the IR LED, the device is designed to allow electrons to skip only to a limited distance that corresponds to the range of affordable infrared wavelengths.

One of the most common uses for IR LED light is in the safety system. Although infrared light is outside the range of light visible to the human eye, the camera is able to detect infrared light, which is just below the visible spectrum. This means that infrared light can be used to illuminate the area at night so that the camera can clearly see and continue to video tape in the area, although the light is invisible to people in this area. Safety cameras designed to work at night will often have an IR LED field around the lens to turn on the filmed area.

Another use for IR LED light is inRemote control of electronics. Remote controls often use IR LED light to send signals to television, stereo or other device by flashing LED light in a particular pattern. This pattern is translated into a number of those and zeros by an infrared receiver on an electronic device. The binary code is translated into instructions that communicate the device to perform a certain task, such as switching on or off.
