For example: PAN truncation (primary account number truncation) is a technology that prevents customers' credit cards, debit cards or bank account numbers from appearing on printed receipts. General point-of-sale terminals (POS) are truncated using a primary account number (PAN), and they have become common in recent years. In many countries, master account truncation is authorized by the government. This is done to prevent fraud or identity theft if printed receipts are accidentally lost or discarded. Most credit card accounts consist of a 16-digit string (four sets of four digits). When truncated using the master account number, only the last four digits appear in the printed receipt sent to the customer. The first three sets of four digits on the customer receipt are replaced with wildcard characters, usually an asterisk (*). The receipt contains enough relevant information that the buyer can use to determine the transaction if necessary. This information includes the name and storage location of the retailer, a list of items purchased, the amount of each item purchased, the amount of sales tax, the date and time. Many banks are taking similar truncations in printed receipts sent to customers for deposits or cash withdrawals.
