What is a multimodal transport?

Multimodal transport is a term used to describe transport and delivery strategy that includes the use of two or more different transport methods. Strategies of this type may include a combination of methods that include different shipments that fall into wide categories of air, sea, rail and road transport. If at least two of these transport methods are used, movement may be considered a multimodal nature.

A simple example of multimodal transport would include the transport of a customer that leaves the warehouse through a truck. The car then travels on the way to the railway, where the goods are unloaded and placed in the railway car. The railway service is used to transport goods to the airport, where it is then loaded on a freight plane. After reaching the airport near the destination, the goods are again loaded into a delivery car, which uses the road system to complete the last stage of delivery route.

There are some advantages of multimodal transport in domestic and international scenarios that make the strategy attractive. In some cases, the combination of two or more transport ways can save a lot of time in terms of delivery of goods. For example, the use of road transport to move goods to the airport for transport will fly to the goods often to the destination to supply these goods in a few hours than on days. Customers who need these goods earlier than later will often pay more to include air services in the mix, allowing the carrier to earn more from the transaction.

At other times, multimodal transport can be used to reduce transport costs. This is especially true when the recipient can afford to wait for a longer period of time. This means that even if the delivery of point may be overseas, the carrier may use the carrier linked to the ocean and sealed shipping containers than the higher costs of moving the goods by air. At both ends of the process can be added to the mixtureana road or rail services, which could be completed with the most effective combination.

Multimodal transport can be efficiently used in a number of scenarios and to manage the successful delivery of a wide range of goods. When placing orders, customers should mention to ask different options available with transport and see if the combination of options would actually result in lower transport costs. Assuming that the combination would allow the delivery of goods to be acceptable to the customer, it can be a combination of rail, air, sea and sea and road to be a good idea.
