What do Timber Merchants Do?
Carpenter refers to the merchant who is engaged in the timber trade. Huizhou mountain area is rich in Chinese fir, and Hui people have been engaged in timber trade since the Southern Song Dynasty. They fell into the mountains every winter and waited until the river flooded during the rainy season to carry them out of the mountains with water, or from Qingying River to Wuhu, or from Xin'an River to Yanzhou (now northeast of Jiande County, Zhejiang), and then Resell everywhere. Although this business method continued in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, due to the economic development of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, the wood produced in Huizhou was far from meeting the increasing demand. As a result, Hui people who are used to operating the timber trade went to Jiangxi, Huguang, and Sichuan to explore new sources of goods and expand timber trafficking activities to obtain business capital. Among these activities, Huizhou Wuyuan people are the most active. They use the Shangxin River in Nanjing as the center of business and trade, and use the Yangtze River to transport wood, collect the upstream wood here, and then distribute it in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and other parts of the north.
