What Does a Laser Surgeon Do?
In 1960, American physicist T.H. Mayman built the first laser. Laser means "a kind of optical radiation based on the principle of stimulated emission amplification". Lasers produce powerful radiation beams with absolutely accurate directivity. Just four years later, H. Vernon Ingram applied lasers to eye surgery.

- The laser is very effective in treating retinal detachment. There are nerve endings on the retina behind the eyeball. The nerve endings convert the image into nerve signals and send them to the brain. Sometimes, a small hole will form in the retina, and the liquid in the eye will leak out. If this small hole is not filled up, the retina will eventually detach and the patient will be blind. However, with only one laser pulse lasting only 0.001 second, small holes can be repaired to prevent further damage.
- Picture: A surgeon replaced a scalpel used in the past with a hand-held laser. Lasers are particularly useful for repairing the retina behind the eye, and can be cut without causing any bleeding. Hemophilia is a disease that causes more bleeding after an incision. Therefore, laser is most suitable for the treatment of such patients.
- Bell Telephone Corporation in 1967 developed a laser that cuts and closes blood vessels simultaneously. Lasers make surgery faster and less damaging.
- Lasers can now be used for cataract surgery and can also be used with endoscopes in microsurgery. A new type of acupuncture uses lasers instead of needles to avoid the danger of transmitting HIV.
