What does the drum teacher do?
The percussion teacher is an instructor who teaches students how to play drums such as bass drums, snare drums, timpani, triangles and xylophones. Such an instructor can provide private lessons to individuals and small groups or can work in the school music department. Percussion teacher often has to prepare and teach drum parts for various performances, especially for small school groups. There are a large number of different tools that fall into the category of "drums", so teachers must be proficient in many different instruments. However, the ability to perform is not always sufficient, because it is expected that most teachers' teachers will have at least some knowledge of music theory and composition to teach their students how to be better overall musicians.
Many drum teachers prefer private lessons for work for larger music programs. The offer of private lessons gives the teacher much more control over the HJE schedule, but such an arrangement offers little certainty or consistencyor employment. In some cases, a private trade teacher may conclude an agreement with a music shop in which the store finds that people are interested in lessons and the teacher provides them, often in the store. This type of arrangement makes it easier to find students and offers a place for lessons, but music shops usually take several percent of the lessons for themselves.
Although positions may be difficult to come, many educational institutes at different academic levels employ drum teachers. The drum teacher at such an institute is generally responsible for the education of all percussionists in the music program. The drum teacher in such an arrangement has much less freedom in terms of material planning and teaching, but tends to have better assistance and consistency. A teacher in Tje's situation, especially in high school, may also have to instruct percussionists during the march because percussionists play an important role in the marchingCH bands.
The effective percussion teacher must be proficient in more than mere drums. Many students who learn which percussion tools also want to learn the general aspects of music theory and performance. Thus, a qualified percussion teacher will be able to use the specifics of percussion performance to illustrate the general aspects of music as a whole. For example, such a teacher will teach students how to read music and instruct students about the foundations of music theory.
