What is a deviated septum?
deviated septum is an irregular arrangement of cartilage that separates both sides of the nasal cavity. The septum is a wall that divides the nasal cavities. It is made of cartilage and divides the nose into two separate cavities.
To have a deviated septum can cause problems such as nasal discharges or breathing problems. Many people can have a slightly deviated septum without realizing it. The more septum is, the more serious the problem. There are many reasons why a person can have a deviation septum. This may be a congenital defect or caused by injury or the result of previous medical treatments. This is known as septoplastics. This procedure can also be performed to correct other health problems such as cleft defects, which also affect the nose and nasal cavities. There are no cuts through the nose, as the operation is performed through the nostrils. Once the septum is exposed, the parts may be removed or pushed back towards the center. The lining is then stitched back,to cover the septum.
The correction of the deviated septa is usually low pain or bleeding. Anesthesia will be given by injection either in the nose or in the mouth. The operation is performed at the operating theater and should take approximately 45 minutes. Most people are able to leave the hospital one to two hours after surgery.
After repairing the deviation septum, a slight swelling into the nose may occur. There should be no blackened around the eyes. There should also be no pain, but if it exists, the drug may be taken. A dressing will be placed under the nose to capture any mucus or blood. This can be a rejection 12 to 24 hours after the operation.
There is a chance of short -term side effects after surgery to repair the deviated septum. They are rare, but may include a dull headache, swelling and bruises around the eyes. Your face may feel inflated and small burst blood vessels may appear as red spots on the surfaceskin. Treatment is always a gradual process, and in some cases it may take up to a year for the results of the surgery to be fully visible.
