Prior to the founding of the People's Republic of China, Professor Xia was mainly engaged in research on the prevention and treatment of trachoma and corneal diseases. In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, in the face of a large number of patients with corneal trauma after the war, Professor Xia further thought deeply on the basis of his previous work and innovated to study corneal transplantation treatment methods. According to his condition, Professor Xia has carried out various projects such as partial corneal transplantation, lamellar transplantation, subtotal transplantation, partial transplantation on conjunctival and lamellar corneal transplantation. In just a few years, more than a dozen papers on corneal transplantation have been published, most of which have been published in the Chinese Journal of Ophthalmology, which has had a greater impact. Although some transplants were carried out in other hospitals in China, no other types of transplants were found. The First Hospital of Medical University is in the leading position in China in terms of the number of beds, the number of surgical treatments, the number of types of transplants, and the good treatment results. He published a research paper on the treatment of optic nerve atrophy in the Journal of Integrated Ophthalmology of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine the following year. It has pioneered outstanding results; in particular, the comprehensive treatment effect of optic nerve diseases has been significantly improved, so that optic nerve diseases can no longer be simply regarded as "incurable diseases".

The magazine is aimed at clinical ophthalmologists and practical, with the purpose of advancing China's ophthalmology level, renewing knowledge and continuing education. Known as a mentor and a good friend by clinicians and colleagues in ophthalmology, it has been widely praised. The magazine has grown rapidly, from its initial quarterly to bimonthly to 1986 monthly publications, with a total of 25 volumes published. After its publication, the affiliation changed and developed several times. In 1995, the Ministry of Health approved to change its name to "Chinese Journal of Practical Ophthalmology". So far, its circulation still ranks first in the country.
As a leading figure in the ophthalmology of New China, Professor Xia has become a model for his successors with his rigorous academic style, rich clinical experience, and tenacity.
