What is flexible cystoscopy?

Flexible cystoscopy uses a thin, flexible, illuminated tube called a cystoscope to view the bladder and urethra. There is also a stiff cystoscope. In the United States, a flexible cystoscope is more commonly used in men, while a rigid cystoscope is used for women.

The bladder is a small, hollow organ that collects urine. When the bladder is full, the urine is emptied from the body by a tube called the urethra. This tube is very short in women, but longer in men. Flexible cystoscopy may occasionally include urethors, which are tubes that transmit urine from the kidneys to the bladder. The kidneys cannot be seen with a cystoscope.

Flexible cystoscopy is used to diagnose and treat diseases and conditions affecting the bladder. It is possible that the biopsy will be done using a cystoscope if polyp or other growth is found and some small tumors can be completely removed. During flexible cystoscopy, other procedures can be performed using a tutorial.

Intravenous sedations can be administered during a flexible cystoscopy procedure. In other cases, the urethra is used numbing jelly or rarely used general anesthesia. The procedure can be performed either at the clinic or as an outpatient procedure in the hospital. Flexible cystoscopy may take five to 30 minutes, depending on the reason for the visits and tools used. Complications include bleeding, pain and infection.

prostate enlargement is one condition that can be diagnosed with flexible cystoscopy. Because the urethra passes through the prostate, this area increases when the prostate is enlarged. Symptoms of enlarged prostate include difficult urination and frequent need to urinate. Cystoscopy cannot determine the cause of the magnification, so if it is found, additional tests will be needed.

flexible cystoscopy can also be done to evaluate the cause of the painfulurination. In this case, the doctor may find that the urethra is narrowed. Another cause of painful urination is urinary stones that can develop in the kidneys or in the bladder. Stones can be removed with a cystoscope or divided by tools passing through the cystoscope.

occasionally polyps or tumors are found in the bladder wall. The most common symptom of them is blood in the urine. Tumors and polyps can be biopic by placing the tool via the cystoscope. This tool is caught on a piece of polyp or tumor and the sample is then sent to the laboratory and analyzed to the presence of cancer cells.
