What Is the Jugular Venous Pressure?
Jugular venous pressure test is an auxiliary test method to check whether the venous blood vessels are normal. The jugular vein is full when a normal person is supine and supine, but the jugular vein collapses in a sitting or semi-sitting position (that is, the upper body is at an angle of 45 degrees to the horizontal plane). In the sitting or semi-sitting position, if the jugular vein is full, flared, or pulsed, it is an abnormal sign. From the level of jugular vein filling and pulsation, the level of central venous pressure can be indirectly estimated. It is estimated that the reliable reference point for central venous pressure is the sternum angle, which is about 5 cm above the center of the right atrium regardless of the patient's position in the semi-sitting or sitting position. Through this examination, the corresponding symptoms can be judged.

Normal jugular pressure
- The jugular vein is full when a normal person is supine and supine, but the jugular vein collapses in a sitting or semi-sitting position (that is, the upper body is at an angle of 45 degrees to the horizontal plane).
Clinical significance of jugular pressure
- Anomalous results: In the sitting or semi-sitting position, if the jugular vein is significantly filled, irritated or pulsating, it is an abnormal sign. People to be checked: Patients with cardiovascular disease.
Jugular pressure check points
- Unsuitable crowd: Generally there is no unsuitable crowd. Contraindications before examination: Maintain a normal diet and sleep. Requirements during inspection: The inspection of the neck should be performed in a calm and natural state. It is best for the examinee to take a comfortable sitting position, untie the underwear, and expose the neck and shoulders. If the patient is lying, it should be exposed as much as possible. The technique should be gentle during the examination, and more attention should be paid when the cervical spine is suspected.
Jugular pressure check
- The patient takes a semi-sitting or sitting position. The physician gently presses the external jugular vein with the finger above the clavicle. After the veins above the compression point are filled, release the finger and observe and measure the distance between the jugular pulse point and the horizontal line of the sternum angle. If it is greater than 4cm, it is estimated that the central venous pressure is greater than 9cm, that is, the increased venous pressure is seen in right heart failure, constrictive pericarditis, pericardial effusion, superior vena cava obstruction syndrome, and increased chest and abdominal pressure.
Jugular Vein Pressure Related Diseases
- Venous thrombosis, traumatic shock, spinal and spinal cord injuries.
Jugular Vein Pressure Symptoms
- Jugular vein filling, positive liver-jugular vein reflux sign, jugular vein distension and so on.
