What are HTML columns?

In Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), columns are a way to define a site area that has a general width less than the overall width of page display. HTML columns allow designers to use the formatting of similar print formatting without having to resort to unreliable tricks such as empty images to create a gap. Each column can also use standard elements to define their width, alignment and spacing.
