What Is a Compressed Folder?
A larger file is compressed to produce another smaller file. And this smaller-capacity file, we call it a compressed file of these larger-capacity (possibly one or more files). The process of compressing this file is called file compression.
File compression
- To use these compressed files, you must restore these compressed files to a file format that can be processed or executed.
- FTP commonly used on the Internet

File compression
- To compress and pack all the files in a folder, we do not need to open the main program window of WinRAR, but can select the folder icon, right-click, and select the "Add to Archive" command in the pop-up menu , Then a window will pop up, enter the compressed file name in the "General" page, the default extension is "? .Rar". Set the save path in Advanced, others can use the default settings. After clicking [OK], the compression progress status bar will appear on the screen; if you want to compress and pack one or several files in a folder, enter the folder, hold down the [Ctrl] key, and select File, and then perform the above operations.
- When compressing a folder, if you want to create a compressed file with the same name in the current path, the method is simpler. Right-click on the folder and select "Add to '***. Rar'" in the pop-up menu. Where *** is the current folder name. This is much faster than opening the WinRAR compression window and then adding files one by one.
File compression
- For RAR compressed files compressed with WinRAR, double-clicking it can use WinRAR to enter the inside of the compressed file. It feels no different from opening an ordinary folder. At this time, there will be more buttons than selecting general files, which are: Extract to the current folder, Extract to the specified folder, Detect the compressed file, Preview the file, Delete the file, Write a comment for the compressed file, Generate a self-extracting file. You just need to select the document and press the button of the desired function, it is very easy.
- WinRAR also provides a simpler method of decompressing: right-click the compressed file, and the system right-click menu includes two commands provided by WinRAR, where "Extract files" means to expand the compressed file file to the current path, "Extract to XXX \ "means create a folder with the same name as the compressed package in the current path, and then expand the compressed file to this path. It can be seen that no matter which one is used, it is very convenient.
File compression creates self-extracting files
- Sometimes, what we need more is to create a self-extracting file, so that it can be called anytime, anywhere without the support of compression software. The method of creating a self-extracting file is also very simple. In the "General" page of the window of Figure 2 that sets the properties of the compressed file, check "Create SFX archive" and you will find that the * .rar just became * .Exe!
File compression to generate volume self-extracting files
- When backing up data or exchanging large files, it is common to use compression software to compress the volume onto a floppy disk, and this compression software is needed when restoring, otherwise these compressed files cannot be recovered. WinRAR has pioneered the generation of self-extracting files in sub-volumes. The compressed sub-volume files produced by it can be used without leaving WinRAR!
- First select the folder or file to be compressed in the main interface, right-click, and select the "Add to Archive" command from the shortcut menu. A small window appears. Fill in the name of the compressed file first. You need to bring the path (such as A: \file name). Then select the value corresponding to the floppy disk from the Volume size drop-down menu. There are six backup options of 360KB, 720KB, 1.2MB, 1.44MB, 2.88MB and automatic detection. You can also enter the value you set. Select the "SFX archive" method in the file options area, and finally click [OK] to start volume compression. The first file extension is .exe and the second file extension is. r00, the third is .r01, and so on. When restoring, first insert the first floppy disk, execute the? .Exe file, and then you will be prompted to insert other floppy disks in turn, and the decompression is successfully completed.
File compression conversion compression format
- WinRAR provides the function of converting a compressed file with the extension .rar into an .exe file (that is, creating a self-extracting file). Using this function, you can easily convert the common compression format created previously into a self-extracting file. This provides great convenience for users to decompress the software. If you want to do this, you can use the following method: First open the corresponding RAR archive in the program interface, then right-click in the file list and select the "Convert archive to SFX" command from the associated menu. The program will give a dialog box "Select SFX module", select the generated EXE file format, and then click the [OK] button to confirm.
