What is a network architect?
A network architect is a person responsible for designing a computer or telecommunications network. While many network architects do not actually create networks they design - that is the work of a network engineer - sometimes they work in the field. This is common for smaller companies where the jobs of the architect and engineering are performed by the same person or if the work is particularly complex. Most architects of network architects work in computer fields that design computer networks, but some work in telecommunications, designing telephone or cable systems.
The network architect creates an initial plan for the network. They usually begin with the arrangement of a building or area they work with. They will find out where the network cables will go, what types of hardware are required and maximum user numbers for each segment. In some cases, they also design virtual aspects of networks and decide which areas are segmented and which zones are able to communate.
In smaller companies, network architects must occasionallyto work in the field. The Field Network Architect designs the net in the same way as a conventional architect, but once the network is distributed, the field architect supervises the system construction and its components. Even as an employee in the field, the architect will probably be in sight rather than in the construction position.
To become an architect of a network that one usually needs to get a bachelor's degree. The most common titles are in the field of computer science or electrical engineering, but some business and building engineering are usually also acceptable. Even with the title, it is not uncommon for a person to work in a related area for five to ten years before he gets to the work of the first architect.
Most network architects have several certifications with different computer systems. Given their common nature in the network industry, Cisco, Novell and Nortel certification is often a specific requirement for work. AnyOLI Certification beyond these companies looks very favorable to potential employees.
One common skill that potential network architects often overlook software. Some common software systems may have a huge impact on the network use. It is not uncommon for people to hire a candidate that can prove a very detailed knowledge of the impact of the common software system on network resources.
