What is a dry gas seal?

Dry gas seal is the type of mechanical seal used for gases without input from contaminants or unintentional release of gas into the surrounding environment. Such seals are available for use with different compressed systems, including in harsh environments where other seals could be susceptible to failure. They work without the need for lubricants and when they are properly installed, they can have a very long operational life with minimal problems.

Numerous companies produce dry gas seals and components. The basic design consists of a set of rings, one stationary and mounted in the system, the other able to rotate freely. As the rotating ring moves, the gas can flow through a series of grooves, forcing the rings apart and creating a barrier to avoid their faces. This prevents gas from release from the system while maintaining contaminants. If contaminants make the way to the seal, they cannot get around the stationary ring.IGn can be used in applications such as oil drilling and gasU, as well as gas handling in laboratories and industrial equipment. Design tolerances are extremely narrow. This is important in installation where small errors can make seals unnecessary or cause to fail unexpectedly. Precise machining of dry gas seal can keep even the best contaminants if properly mounted and maintained.

Lubrication deficiency means that the seal requires less maintenance. Technicians do not have to break down and clean it because there should be no lubricants. In the long run, there is also less wear of seals that can support a longer working life. Regular examination of seals is still necessary to check the symptoms of fatigue and can be introduced a monitoring system to ensure that the seal is regularly checked by qualified staff.

The new systemifs is desirable, it can be equipped with a dry gas seal from the beginning. It is also possible to equipIT replacing the seals on an existing system with this design. Different sizes are produced with different components to master conditions with extreme heat or cold, unusually small contaminants and other challenges. For a given application, it is important to choose the right dry gas product to reduce the risk of problems while in operation.
