What is the lathe chisel?

The lathe is a type of handmade tool made for use with a lathe. It is designed to be held against a work piece because it is turned by a lathe, cutting the material from the work. The operator manipulates the chisel and uses it to remove the material and create the desired shape on the workshop. Most lathes are designed for use on wood and there are many shapes and sizes. The handle is most often wood, but it can be metal, resin, urethan, nylon or other material created. The chisel head is usually hard steel with very sharp cutting. The edge must be very sharp to avoid splitting and provide clean cut on the workpiece when it turns on on the lathe. It allows the operator to shape the working part in any number of adapts, the production of complex designs and shapes. The experienced lathe operator will be able to choose the right cutter with the right cutting head.

Cutting head PIPSUhu has one of a series of possible cutting shapes. The bevelled edge of the cutting head may be straight, curved or even angular. Curves can be mild or extreme, up to U -shaped. The angles may differ from several degrees to acute. In addition to the diversity of available shapes, the turning chisels also differ in size and a complex set of turning chisels will include several different chisels, all with a similar shape to their cutting profile.

There are turning chisels designed for specific tasks. Bead chisels are used to create semicircular beads around the workpiece, while the bowls are used to cut bowls on the lathe. Coarse chisels are designed to remove large quantities and for the production of irregular shapes. Spindle species are often used to create fine patterns on spindles, such as those used for table legs and staircases. Other types of turners are bevelled chisels, chisels with round nose and splitting chisels.
