What is a litz wire?

Litz wires are power cables that consist of several individually insulated wires. This type of wire is designed specifically for use with AC power (AC) to reduce the side effects of two different phenomena. These phenomena, known as the effects of proximity and skin, may result in a reduction in the efficiency of higher frequency alternating power. The way in which the litz wire deals with the effect of the skin is to provide a smaller cross -section profile in each individual wire. Because each component wire can also be twisted, it is also possible to minimize the close effect. In the case of very high alternative current frequencies, this effect of the line of most electricity carried out near the wire surface is also distributed throughout the wire surface. Part of the wire that really carries the current is known as a ski-pitch. Since most of the wire is unused for the current transmission, it is an unnecessary situation that can also lead to a reduction in efficiency. One way to deal withWith the skin effect phenomenon, it is to deepen the wire so that the unused part no longer exists, but the litz wire can be a more compact solution.

In order to deal with the effect of the skin, each litz wire consists of many smaller wires. Each of these wires has a diameter that is about one depth of the skin, so all material can be used to guide electricity. Individual wires can be connected together and in some cases several volumes turn into one conductor. Higher frequencies require thinner individual wires, so it may be important to know the characteristics of the AC current in a specific application to choose the correct litz wire.

Another problem that can be litz wire is the effect of proximity. This is a phenomenon that results in a total higher resistance when more wires carry electricity in close proximity to each other. The current can be limited to a smaller area than usual, resulting in a situation known as withou time crowd. In order to solve this problem, each component wire can be twisted. Many different types of insulators can be used, although polyurethane is often selected because it may not be removed before soldering the wire.
