What is Cordwood Construction?

Cordwood Construction is a technique of building a house that uses a combination of wood and mortar masonry. It is often known as Stackwall or Stockwood Construction and has been practiced for centuries, especially in colder climate. Rather than using full beams or steel framing, Cordwood houses are made of shorter parts of wood, similar to firewood. This technique is associated with a number of environmental benefits that helped increase its popularity over time, even if newer building materials have been introduced.

The walls used in the cord construction generally range from 12 to 36 inches (30.5 to 91.4 cm) in thickness. The layers of frightened wooden protocols are stacked to form the walls, the ends of each protocol towards the outer surface of the wall. They are held together with traditional mixes from Portland cement, lime, sand and water. Some larger Cordwood houses can contain a post-a beam frame while others use only Cordwood and mortar.Prokocols are oftenarranged to project a few inches from the face of Malta and provide a rustic traditional look of the cabin.

There are two basic techniques used to insulate Cordwood home. The most common is the method through, where the insulation is added directly to the mortar in the form of sawdust or shredded newspapers. Some builders can also use mortar/insulation/mortar construction (MIM). Using MIM technology, the protocols are normally stacked, but the mortar is only located at both ends of the protocol. When the wall is built, insulation with free filling is located between the protocols and the mortar layers.

Cordwood Construction offers many different benefits to homeowners. It is easy and quick to install and is much more cost -effective than traditional framing wood or steel. Cordwood walls are flexible and can be created in any desired shape or design. The thickness of these walls provides a high level tePenal resistance, especially when adding proper insulation.
