Introduction
After the final review of a manuscript by the editorial department and before the layout of the printing house, the design department should give full consideration to the following issues:
Folio. According to the nature of the manuscript, the number of words, and the accompanying charts, it is advisable to type out what format. Except for large pictorials, which are mostly 8 open, magazines which are mostly 16 open, and pocket books which are mostly 64 or 100 open, general books are mostly 32 or 32 large. In principle, books with significant value or more words are used in larger format; however, smaller formats may be used depending on the situation. Sometimes in order to be unique, different styles of paper of different specifications are also used, for example, 36 poems are commonly used in poems, 60 comics are often used in comic books.
Binding form. Paperback or hardcover, or both; whether to print a small number of special collections; whether to print popular or pocket editions; whether to print overseas editions in addition to domestic editions; whether books with many words are divided into volumes (Volume) is published, how many volumes (volumes) are divided into, where are the boundaries between volumes (volumes) and volumes (volumes), and whether the thickness of each volume (volume) is roughly the same. In addition, some ancient books need to be printed and bound, and there is also the problem of sub-volumes (volumes).
Layout of the main text and supplementary text. What font and size are used in the text, how many lines are on each side, and how many characters are on each line. What fonts, font sizes, and lines of text are used for the titles and order of each level, and what fonts, font sizes, and formats are used for citations. Whether annotations are footnotes or clips (commonly used in ancient books), post-notes or post-notes, how to deal with note codes and notes. The page numbers of the text are listed below or above; do you want to add an eyebrow (horizontal) or a middle (straight). How to deal with table of contents, appendices, indexes, etc. How to deal with dedication, preface, postscript, etc. Finally, arrange the title page, the content summary, as well as the version number (copyright page), the uniform number of the back cover, and pricing.
chart. Are the illustrations and tables enclosed in the manuscript inserted into the body of the text and printed with the text, or printed on top of a separate sheet of superior paper? If it is an inset, whether to print in color Form design should be calculated accurately, especially spread-sheet forms.
Cover and attachments. The design of the cover is based on the principle of fit for the content of the book, beautiful and generous. The paper material used for the cover of this paperback must be of good quality, thick and abrasion-resistant, and can be added to the mouth if necessary. The cover of the hardcover is divided into two types, hard surface and soft surface. The material range is wide. In addition to the industrial edition paper used for the shell, as well as various paper, cloth, and leather materials, there are head cloths, back strips, and ribbons. Some hardcovers need to be enclosed (or sealed), as well as book covers, book boxes and the like, which need to be designed separately. The title page of the hardback, as well as the front and rear ring linings, must also be designed separately.
Publishing houses generally have a cover design room (or art design room) and a text design department (or technical design department) to share the above tasks. This structure is suitable for designing general books. As for key books and hardcover books, usually under the direct leadership of the editor in chief, individual personnel are selected from the above two rooms to set up a special design group to give full play to the guiding role of the design department in the overall binding work. Combined, the formal beauty of the cover and the layout of the main body are harmonized to form a unified style, which comprehensively improves the design quality of the book, thereby achieving the purpose of infecting readers and enriching the content of the book. The members of the special design team must not only have high design capabilities, but also must understand and be familiar with the printing production process. They should design as needed and possible, and also cooperate with the printing factory to properly solve the many specific problems that arise when there are conflicts between design and materials, design and printing, and materials and printing during the printing production process, such as: hot stamping Anodized aluminum, toner foil, embossed plate, cover film, plastic spraying, color printing, multi-color overprinting, paper and ink combination, and two editions (plate making, typesetting), one order (binding) Various technical issues. In this way, the special form beauty produced by the texture and touch of the material can be fully utilized and brought into play, and the overall concept of design intent can be realized through modern printing process.
