What is Mud Logging?
Mud is a semi-colloidal suspension of tiny particles of clay dispersed in water and mixed with water. In colloid chemistry, solid clay is called dispersed or solid phase, and water is called medium or liquid phase. If the solid phase disperses molecules, ions, and there is no homogeneous body between the solid and liquid phases, it is called a true solution, such as a solution in which common salt is dissolved in water. For example, the particles dispersed in the liquid phase are composed of many molecules. Although the particles are very small, there is a phase interface. Such a mixture is called a colloid solution. Various commonly used glues belong to this category. If it is similar to a colloidal solution, but more than 40% of the solid particles are larger than 0.2 m (1 m = 0.001 mm), it is called a semi-colloid or suspension. Mud belongs to this semi-colloid suspension. [1]
- The mud is made by stirring clay with water. Use of mud can prevent hole collapse, suspended debris, and safe passage
- Clay and water are the basic materials that make up the mud, and clay is the most important part of the mud. The quality of clay and water, especially the quality of clay, has a direct impact on the changes in mud properties and the effect of chemical treatment. [4]
- The mud was gradually developed by the working people in the long-term struggle for production practice. Working people are beginning to adopt
- With the development of drilling work, the use and research of mud have continued to develop, new mud
- The mud was used in drilling in 1901. At that time, the Hamill brothers in the United States were drilling for "spindle tops" in Texas in search of oil. In order to cope with the problems such as sand layers during drilling, the use of mud to strengthen the support of the drilling wall is still in use today. At that time, mud refers to ordinary mud, which is actually used in modern engineering.
- In drilling engineering, mud is usually synonymous with drilling fluid and is mainly used in drilling engineering operations for oil and natural gas. Mud is usually water, oil or oil-water mixture containing a large amount of suspended matter, gel.
- The role of mud in drilling is very large, and people often call it the "blood" of drilling.
