What is a sigmoid collectomy?

Sigmoid collectomy is a surgery in which the sigmoid large intestine or the last part of the large intestine is removed because it is damaged or sick. After removing this section, surgeons usually try to connect the rectum to the remaining part of the large intestine. After the procedure, stay in the hospital is necessary and the patient can usually go home within a week or two.

Before the sigmoid collectomy, the patient must usually get their other health conditions under control. For example, if it is overweight, doctors will usually require to lose a certain number of pounds before it goes through operations. High blood pressure must also be regulated, along with heart and lung disease. Most patients must also stop smoking before they undergo a sigmoid collectomy. After the patient is asleep, the surgeon begins to cut at the lower abdomen. This cut is USUALLY around 15 inches (40 centimeters) long.

The lower part of the large intestine and the upper part of the rectum is then stretched through the abdominal wall. Then they are removed by any nopowerful or damaged parts of this part of the colon. During the sigmoid collectomy, it may also be necessary to remove other parts of the large intestine due to the spread of the disease.

After removing part of the large intestine, surgeons usually try to combine the rest of the large intestine to the rectum. Many times temporary colostomy can be used to maintain waste products from medicinal areas. Colostomy is a hole in the abdomen that uses drainage to collect human waste products in the bag, instead of giving away the rectum. In the sigmoid colostomy, where surgeons are unable to combine the rest of the large intestine to the rectum, colostomy may be permanent.

The first few hours after the sigmoid colostomy, the patient is usually transferred to the recovery room. Here his vital symptoms will usually be monitored to ensure that he does not have an unfavorable response to anesthesia. After moving to a normal room will usually have to stay in POSteli for at least one day. Tubes can be inserted into the stomach and intravenous fluids are usually necessary.

Patients can usually get up and move with help within one or two days. This will usually be quite painful, but many times the pain will retreat during the week. The sutures at the cut point will usually be removed after about seven to ten days.

Most patients are usually released from the hospital within two weeks after the sigmoid collectomy. Before being released from the hospital, they will usually be informed about how to take care of colostomy if necessary, as well as any limits of activities. Many patients are able to restore their normal daily activities within a few months after the procedure.>
