What is an antihistamine nasal spray?

Many of the prescribed nasal sprays for allergies use corticosteroids to help reduce inflammation. They need to be used regularly to gain the best benefits, and some people have found that they do not care about certain side effects associated with them. Although rare in the occurrence, there is a slightly increased risk of developing corticosteroid sprays. If people cannot tolerate sprays or do not want this risk of danger, there are several antihistamine prescription sprays that could be tested instead. These place nasal tissue directly in contact with medicines that can help block nasal allergies and histamine reaction. These are azelastin and olopatadin, also known under Astelin® and Patanase®. Of these two, olopathadine is a relatively recent drug and can only be available in its branded form. Theestelin® is on the market for a much longer time and it is possible to buy its generic versions.

One of the advantages of steroid sprays is that they usually do not cause drowsiness. It can be a side effect of an antihistamine nasal spray, even if many people get used to this effect and stop feeling it after a while. All types of nasal sprays can sometimes irritate skin tissue and have a side effect of nasal bleeding. Antihistamines do not tend to cause nausea, which can be a side effect of steroid sprays, and the reduced risk of glaucoma is attractive.

When testing, most steroid nasal sprays are more effective than antihistamine nasal spray, but there may be very good reasons for its choice. In addition to having several smaller side effects, histamine blockers have a significant benefit compared to steroid spray. They tend to work now, usually wje to serve an hour, while steroid sprays can take several days to fully take place. This might indicate that antihistamine nasal spray would be more suitable for people who suffer from time to timeby allergies and who may not need or want to use spray every day.

Like most drugs, both types of prescribed antihistamine nasal spray have drug interactions. In particular, it may be necessary for Patanase® to be used with caution when used with behavior drugs such as tranquilizers or antidepressants. People should become acquainted with their doctors to see if some current drugs or conditions would exclude using a nasal spray. When no other drugs interfere, some people find that antihistamine nasal spray is a good alternative to steroid spray.
