What is articulation therapy?

Articulation therapy is a form of therapy in speech language, often simply called speech therapy that focuses on how speech sounds are formed. It is a treatment used by children or adults who have difficulty saying words clearly enough to easily understand others. The treatment of articulation disorders is provided by a certified or licensed pathologist of speech language (SLP).

Articulation refers to the production of speech sounds. A person with an articulation failure incorrectly expresses different sounds in certain words by distortion, adding or omitting some sounds. One example of articulation disorder is informally called a lisp in which the person misinterprets the sound of "S" as if it were "th" sound. This disorder could be a complication of developmental delay, hearing disorder, autism, congenital defect or brain damage, including possible causes. Adults could fight with problems with articulation as a result of health conditions such as stroke or head injury, or could have noYar in childhood speech problems. The diagnosis of articulation disorder may require an articulation test in which the person is recorded to document sound errors. Physical examination of the face and mouth can also be performed to assess the function of muscle related to speech.
