What is doxycycline?

Doxycycline is a prescription drug used to combat bacterial growth. This antibiotic is used to treat a number of diseases and conditions caused by bacteria, including urinary tract infections; sexually transmitted diseases (STD) such as chlamydia; and some types of acne. Doxycycline works by disrupting the production of bacteria protein, slowing bacterial growth. It can be used, usually without food, in various forms, including liquid, tablet and gel forms. This antibiotic may be effective, but in some people it may cause side effects and may not be safe for pregnant women and patients with conditions such as liver disease.

When doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections, it works by disrupting the usual functioning of bacteria. Bacteria usually produce protein as they need to live, and this antibiotic disrupts the production of bacteria proteins. When doxycycline works as it should, it actually destroys bacteria that are responsible for the cause. There are some people who are usually recommended to use doxycycline. For example, pregnant women may be recommended against its use, and nursing mothers are usually recommended that the doctor is asked if it is safe for use in nursing. Individuals who are allergic to drugs that are similar to doxycycline can also recommend to prevent it. For example, people who have had allergic reactions to tetracycline in the past may not be good candidates for the use of this antibiotics. In addition, doctors can carefully proceed to people who have diseases or kidneys when prescribing doxycycline.
