What is Kamal?
Kamala is a common name for the tree Mallotus philippinensis , also known as Rottlera. The tree grows throughout tropical India, along the legs of the Himalayas from Kashmir to the east, in Abyssinia, China, Australia and other places in the east. It is a small Evergreen tree of the spurge family that many believe they have healing properties. Kamala has been used by Ayurvedic practices for centuries and has been mentioned in an ancient Indian text, Kurmapuran , from 1000 B.C.
The tree produces capsules or fruits of small cherry size, which ripens in February and March. The glands and hairs are collected from ripe fruit and crushed them or roll them between the palms of the hand. Since antiquity, capsules that are heavily covered with red powder have been rolled in large wicker baskets to allow this powder to pass into another container. Seed oil is also collected from Tree and used as medicine. It is assumed to have antioxidant, anti -inflammatory and other therapistsCalic properties. It is used to kill and eliminate tapeworms and to treat herpetic circular worm and other skin disorders such as scabies and leprosy. The powder is used to treat eye diseases and legend says it is a strong aphrodisiac.
Kamala is also used in the treatment of bronchitis, abdominal disease, enlargement of spleen and other diseases. Its strong antioxidant and anti -radical properties suggest that Kamala may be suitable for use as an additive for food and nutraceutics. It is used in ghee and vegetable oil as a natural antioxidant.
In addition to traditional medicine, there are other uses for Kamal. The powder that covers the capsules is used to create a brownish orange dye that is used for cotolation of silk and wool. The oil is used as treatment of dry and damaged hair and is added to ointments to support healing.
