What is ketoprofen gel?

Ketoprofen Gel is a drug that is applied directly to the skin to reduce the pain that occurs in the localized body area. It is most commonly used to treat joint pain and muscle pain by reducing inflammation. The advantage of using gel ketoprophenes instead of taking medication in the form of a pill is that it causes less systemic side effects due to local application. Although not available in the United States, the drug is available under the Fastum® brand in a number of European countries. It inhibits an enzyme called cyclooxygenase, which usually works by creating chemicals known as prostaglandins and thromboxans. These two groups of chemicals can cause pain, inflammation, irritation, swelling and redness in the body. When cyclooxygenase is blocked ketoprofen, patients may experience reduced inflammation and pain.

Historically, pharmaceutical drug ketoprofen was administered either in the form of pills or intravenous administration. Ketoprofen gel, in which the active ingredient is applied locally to the skin, was a relatively recent development. It offers an advantage of reducing pain and inflammation, while having less harmful effects throughout the body. This is useful in conditions such as arthritis in which only specific parts of the body must experience the useful effects of ketoprofen. It avoids many side effects associated with the giving of ketoprophene as pills or as intravenous drugs, as the drug may have adverse effects on different body organs in administration by these methods.

Usually ketoprofen gel is used for musculoskeletal pain. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis often benefit from the use of gel on the passage that cause pain. The tendon or muscle inflammation connecting connective tissue can also be released by applying this drug. Muscle pain, caused by excessive use or stress of injury, also helps apply this gel.

The common side effects of ketoproph gel usually include skin and pain irritation. PatiaNTIs could develop at the administration site. Skin areas used by the gel of ketoprophenes have often increased the sensitivity to the sun, and when exposed to these regions, caution should be caution when exposed to sunlight. Some experts recommend protecting these areas of skin from sunlight or solariums for two weeks after gel application.

rarely, patients could experience some systemic side effects from the administration of ketoprofen gel. When it is applied to the skin, ketoprofen reaches only 1% of blood concentration levels that would achieve if it raised like a pill. Nevertheless, systemic side effects could be disabled by nausea, headache, increased risk of bleeding, constipation and toxicity for liver and kidneys.
