What is Rifaximin?
Antibiotic, which works differently than many others, Rifaximin is used to treat Traveler's diarrhea. The prescription drug prevents e coli from growth in the intestines, but does not cure all bacterial forms of condition. Other use of the drug is the treatment of liver encephalopathy, for which it is considered to be an orphaned medicine and to alleviate symptoms for some people with irritating bowel syndrome.
Unlike many other antibiotics, this drug is not absorbed into the blood. Instead, it passes through the stomach and in the intestines and treats bacterial infections. This means that it will not fight other bacterial infections in the body.
The drug comes in the form of a tablet and is used by mouth with or without food. When used to treat traveler diarrhea in adults and children for 12 years, rifaximine is usually used three times a day for three days. In adults with liver encephalopathy, a dose of 550 Mge is usually prescribed twice a day. Like all prescription drugs, instructions for rifaximin should be followedcarefully and accurately.
After receiving rifaximin, symptoms should improve within a few days. If not, the patient should contact a doctor.
