What are Bluets?

Many species of flowering plants belonging to the genus Centaurea are called idols. This group of plants includes both annuals and perennials and all species are herbal, which means parts of the plant that are above the ground, like stems and leaves, die every year. Most species in the family Centaurea are plants similar to thistle, with gloomy flowers in the shape of cups or baskets, which are usually different shades of blue, but can also be red, white or yellow. Bluet, sometimes spent Blewitt, can also apply to other types of plants, including plants in the genus Hedyotis, Houstonia or Oldenlandiopsis, which all belong to the Rubiaceae plant family. These plants usually grow or creep, with small flowers that are blue or white. Different types of these are known under different names, such as bachelor buttons, knapweeds, basketflowers, corn and stars. In British English, blues are sometimes called loggerheads. In the wild, these plants are strong growers and can do dockIt become invasive if fist conditions are favorable to them. Centaurea plants prefer full sun and often produce a lot of nectar, attract many types of insects, including bees and butterflies.

Many types of centaurea are easily grown as garden plants and their seeds are commonly available in stores. Seeds can often be sown directly in the garden at the end of spring or early summer and should be covered darkly and maintained wet so that it can germinate successfully. In general, plants prefer full sun, relatively resistant to drought and to tolerate different types of soil. The second species of bluets belonging to the Rubiaceae plants includes Oldenlandiopsis, more often known as the creeping bluet and the Hadyotis Rod of Plants. These plants most often occur in warm tropical oBlastech like Hawaii, Mexico and Central America. A closely related genus Houstonia plants includes many species called idols, and these flowers are common in many parts of North America like wild flowers and garden plants. It includes species such as Houstonia Caerulea, also known as Azure Bluet and Houstonia Pusilla or Tiny Bluet. Most Houstonia species usually grow higher than 3 inches (7.5 cm) and often create excellent plants for rock gardens.
