What are some types of ants?

There are 10,000 known ants that form the Formicidae family in the order of Hymenopter, and it is estimated that there are 20,000 to 30,000 species worldwide. Different types of ants are often grouped in many different ways that they live their lives, for example by what they eat, how aggressive they are or how they colonize. These insects can also vary in size, some of them are as small as 1/25 inches and another one -inch.

The size of the colonies also varies between many different types of ants, some of which contain a dozen ants and others with more than a million members. The structures of these colonies are very similar, but usually contain at least one queen with an egg layer and many workers. The work of ants without wings include building nests, searching for food, care for young and defense colony. The task of a man in most ants is simply a queen and men and queens usually have wings.

The first of many types of ants that often come to mind is a carpentry ant, which can grow as large as 1/2 inches long. These types of ants create their home in living or dead trees and sometimes inside the decaying wood inside buildings. They feed on proteins, sugar, live and dead insects and supplies of human foods such as meat, sugar or jelly. Carpenter ants are wrongly assumed that they eat wood that are pushed only when they kick it and create tunnels.

Army ants are particularly aggressive types of ants who are prey for spiders, insects and other ants and have a very painful sting, although they are usually not hostile to people unless provoked. Most army ants can be found in tropical areas of the world, while several species live in a colder climate in North America. These types of ants no more massive colonies that can contain several million members and live in temporary nests called bivouaks.

There are more than 280 species of fiery ants around the world, another aggressive type of ant that in groups can kill a small animal with its toxic stabs. Most of the time, however, fire ants feed on plants, seeds and other insects and do their nests in the soil, sometimes building hills that reach heights above the foot high. The colony of fiery ants can begin with a single queen and spread quite quickly to thousands of ants.

The spirit of ants are types of ants who have acquired their name because their small size, color of light and the erratic movement can be seen. These ants are common pests throughout the southern and central Florida and sporadically around the world and are known to look for sweet foods. Their colonies are highly mobile with several queens and can be particularly difficult to get rid of.
